Hi everyone, I’m Dr Maxine Stead, owner of Alexandra House Spa. I’m 47 and live with my partner, Al. I set up Alexandra House in 2007 as a haven for people to visit and switch off from everyday life and totally relax. Alexandra House is a holistic spa where we concentrate on offering treatments and the space to calm your mind, body and soul. There’s not many places these days where you can be totally quiet – no phones, no noise, no jobs to do. But at the Spa you can totally switch off and have a few hours contemplating, rejuvenating and restoring whilst we look after everything for you.

So, who am I? I was brought up in Roberttown, Liversedge and went to Heckmonwike Grammar School then Greenhead College. After my A-levels, I took a year out and spent a year in Australia before studying Pharmacology and Physiology at Leeds University. My first job was a data entry clerk in a cancer research unit based at Cookridge Hospital in Leeds. Over the years I progressed in my role and when the National Cancer Research Network was established by the government in 2001 I was appointed Assistant Director, a role that involved coordinating research activity across the NHS.  During my work I also obtained a PhD researching the quality of life of women with cancer.

My role within the research environment became more general and I had to travel a lot and I was feeling disillusioned with my job. After a holiday to Bali, I decided to have a change of career to set up a holistic health spa. I did some market research and attended a course on setting up your own business and decided to take the plunge! I qualified in Indian Head Massage and Reiki (I’m now a Reiki Master and Teacher). I rented a property for the business and employed 2 experienced therapists who helped me set everything up.

The world went into recession just after the Spa was established, but we managed to grow the Spa and our reputation, and 11 years later I now own new Spa premises and we employ 14 people. I live next door to the Spa so get to enjoy the beautiful gardens and Spa facilities!

It’s been a fantastic journey. I love helping people de-stress and re-charge. I’ve made lots of lovely friends along the way – customers, staff and other business associates around Huddersfield. I’m looking forward to finishing the development of the premises with some new Spa facilities and to continuing to welcome customers in the years going forward.

In my spare time, I enjoy going to the gym, meditation, reading, spending time with my friends and family and learning more about emotional well-being and wellness.

I look forward to welcoming you to Alexandra House soon.
